SUMMER LAYERS

Master the art of layering even when it is hot outside. By Mughni Che Din

We know, you might be shaking your head in disbelief— especially if you are sweating it out in the hot tropical weather like Kuala Lumpur. While your initial instinct is to wear as little clothing as possible, however, you can still play with layering— all it takes is just a little bit of creativity.

Let’s start with the basics, shall we?

1. Keep it lightweight

When the weather is warm, it is important to ensure that your layering pieces are made of light and breathable materials. Think cotton, jersey, linen, seersucker, or georgette. These materials will help to keep you stay cool on scorching hot days.

Pro tip: Hold your piece of clothing into the light; the more light that passes through the fabric, the more breathable it is.

    2. Easy On/Easy Off

Another important thing to consider when layering in warm weather is the ability to put on and remove layers. Opt for light outerwear like cardigans, unlined blazers, or linen jackets. If the temperature rises and proves to be unbearable, throw it over the shoulders or wrap around waist for a preppy style update.

      3. Think Loose

By now, you’d probably understand how important air flow and ventilation is when it comes to summer layering. Consider loose silhouettes that will allow the air to circulate through the skin.

        4. Light Colours

Avoid dark colours as it absorbs heat. Light colours reflect much of the heat and although you might think it is a small thing to consider. It will make a huge difference when the sun is blazing and there is no shade in sight.

          5. Have fun

Finally, do not overthink, just have fun with it! Layering allows for more creativity and eccentricity. Don’t worry about not getting it on the first go, keep experimenting with different layering combos until you find a formula that works best for you.

So, there is no reason you can’t master the art of layering in summer. All it takes is a little imagination, some experimentation, and the drive to bring it all together. So be bold, be brave and be confident. Knowledge is power, right?
